It is a general notion that only children are vaccinated, however, there are several vaccines that are useful for adults as well. Following are the some vaccines:
- Flu vaccination – Flu vaccination lowers the risk of having flu.
- Who needs flu shot: Everyone from six months of age to older people needs flu shot. Especially important for pregnant women, chronic illness (diabetes, asthma and heart diseases) and people aged 65 years and older.
- Who should not take it: People with life threatening allergic reaction to flu vaccine.
- Tdap vaccination- It stands for tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis. All three causes serious illness.
- Who needs it: Everyone can take it. Especially pregnant women, it gives short term protection against whooping cough to baby.
- Who should not take it: People with seizures and allergic reaction to Tdap.
- Hepatitis vaccine - These viruses infect the liver. It prevents serious infections like liver scarring, failure and cancer.
- Who needs it: People exposed to body fluids through which hepatitis spread.
- Who should not take it: People allergic to this vaccination.
- Pneumococcal vaccine –It protects against pneumonia, meningitis and other infections, which leads to severe illness.
- Who needs it: Anyone, aged 65 or older can take this. People having diseases like asthma, heart disease, diabetes, COPD etc. and active smokers.
- Who should not take it: People allergic to this vaccine.
- HPV vaccination – It prevents cervical and valvular cancer in women. Everyone can take it at the age of 11 or 12 years. Pregnant women should not take this vaccine.
