The majority of URIs are caused by viruses and they are self-limited. Symptoms of URIs include cough, runny nose, sneezing, nasal congestion, nasal discharge, fever, scratchy or sore throat, and nasal breathing. Simple techniques like covering face while sneezing or coughing and proper hand washing can reduce spread of upper respiratory infections. Following are tips to take care of URIs.

  • Environment- keep house clean and avoid air pollution which includes tobacco smoke, car exhausts fumes and industrial pollution.
  • Diet- Eat balanced diet which contains minerals and vitamins. Good nutrition is important as it boosts body immune system. Take plenty of water and fresh juices as it keeps body hydrated.
  • Hand wash- Wash hands frequently with hand wash soaps. Also wash your hands well before preparing food, taking medications, eating food, when taking breathing treatments and after coughing or sneezing. Also carry waterless hand sanitizers and use it when it necessary.
  • Stay at home if you are unwell- If you are suffering from flu or cold stay home until it is cured. It helps to cure the infection faster and you won’t meet others and spread your respiratory infection.
