Ways to Boost Immunity
The world is no friendly place! Everyday our body faces the task of battling a variety of germs. The white blood cells (WBCs) of our body take the lead in destroying them. Most people may produce an ‘army’ of 100 billion WBCs every day! Despite this, the invading germs may gain control and cause an infection. How can we strengthen our immune system?
The immune system is spread out at various levels in our body. WBCs are only a part of this ‘system’. General healthy living creates balance and harmony for the proper functioning of the entire system.
Let’s list out ‘do’s’ for the proper functioning of our immune system:
- Have a diet rich in protective foods such as fruits and vegetables. Vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, and zinc found in them are known to build immunity and help prevent infection.
- Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight as they support overall good health. Exercise also helps minimize stress and helps you sleep better.
- Get adequate sleep: Not getting enough sleep may lead to increased stress hormone levels and inflammation.
- Minimize stress: Many ailments from hives to heart disease are linked to stress. Chronic stress hormones suppress the immune system. Good sleep, exercise, meditation, and connecting with people can help reduce stress.
- Do not smoke and limit alcohol: Studies have shown that they may interfere with immune response.
Personal hygiene and hygiene while cooking prevent the entry of infectious agents in the first place. Adopting healthful changes is like wearing protective gear against infections. So let’s get started today!
