As the nation moves towards more relaxed COVID-19 restrictions, it has become evident that many will still be working from home. Hence our dependence on electronic gadgets for our job/work has increased many folds. Most of us are glued on laptop screen throughout the day or working hours. Apart from desktop/laptop, it has become a habit to frequently check phone from time to time. This is the reason you might often observe redness and irritation in your eyes. Hence eye care becomes even more important.

Here are a few tips to keep a check on your eye health and to avoid eye strain:

Wash eyes frequently

A British study found that people will spend 34 years looking at screens during their lifetime. Extended screen time due to work from home can damage people's eyes and cause vision problems. Splash cold water on your eyes a few times in a day. Afterwards, just pat dry them with a soft towel and do not rub it.

Take a break

It's important for your vision health to take a break once every two hours. Take a walk before getting back to work. Also, follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at least 20 feet away. Keep looking at that object for 20-30 seconds and then close your eyes. This will soothe your eyes and also prevent them from straining.

Exercise

A very simple exercise can help to maintain your eyes health. Keep the pencil at an arm's length and focus on the tip. Now move the pencil closer to you and back to the original position. Repeat this for 4 to 5 times. It will help to relax your eyes.

Blink your eyes

When we are using our digital devices, our blink rate goes down and this leads to dry eyes. Blink for 8 to 10 times at a constant speed once every hour. With each blink, fresh tears are layered onto the surface of your eyes.

Maintain good posture and lights

Do not lie down while using your laptop and do not work on your laptop in a dark room. Make sure to set up your work area with good lighting. If possible always given preference to bright and natural light.

A simple remedy

One of the common repercussions is tired eyes. Just place a spoon in the refrigerator's freezer for 15 minutes or until it's chilled. Then place the hollow part of it on your eyes. It will help to reduce puffiness as it helps contract the blood vessels around the eyes.

Schedule yearly eye exams

Even if you have perfect vision, it is always a good idea to get your annual vision exam or eye checkup. Because prevention and early detection are the key ingredients to keeping good vision, for life. Working from home has its perks. For instance, you can actually have better chances of resting your eyes compared to working in an actual office. So if you have the privilege of working from home, take it as an opportunity to make sure your eye wellness is taken care of.
