A Pap smear, also known as a Pap test, is an examination performed by a doctor to screen women for cervical cancer. It is performed to detect changes in cervical cells before they develop into cancer. As a thumb rule, detecting it as soon as possible gives one the best chance of beating it. Because detecting cell changes early can help you avoid cancer.

Why it is important?

Screening is the testing of all women who are at risk of developing cervical cancer, the majority of whom will have no symptoms. Screening aims to detect precancerous changes that, if left untreated, can lead to cancer.

A pelvic exam is usually performed in conjunction with a Pap smear.

The Pap test may be combined with a test for human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted infection that can cause cervical cancer, in women over the age of 30. The HPV test may be used instead of a Pap smear in some cases.

Procedure

It is a simple and quick procedure that is performed on an outpatient basis (no admission is required). A Pap smear is obtained by scraping a small sample of cells from the cervix with a spatula, creating a smear on a glass slide, and sending it for cytological examination.

What should one do to prepare for my Pap smear?

It is not difficult to prepare for a pap smear. For the most accurate results, use the following formula:

  • Make an appointment for your Pap smear on a day when you are not menstruating.
  • Avoid sexual activity for one to two days before your Pap smear.

How frequently does one need a Pap smear?

The frequency with which you will have the test is determined by a variety of factors, including your age, health history, and the results of your most recent Pap or HPV test. After the age of 65, most people no longer require Pap smears.

In general, Pap smears are performed:

  • Every three years between the ages of 21 and 29.
  • Without an HPV test, every three years from the ages of 30 to 65.
  • An HPV test is recommended every five years between the ages of 30 and 65.
