Ragi, which is a millet is a food which is commonly used in some part of our country.

In fact, before rice took over, many people in our country were dependent on millets like Ragi.

Ragi is also a crop that can be grown in areas where there is not sufficient water for agriculture. It is a humble millet but is a super food. Here is why.

  • Ragi is very rich in fibre, so is a very good food for those suffering from diabetes.
  • Complex carbohydrates present in Ragi are slowly absorbed into the blood unlike rice and wheat.
  • Thus, they are very good to control post-prandial (following meal) levels of glucose in blood.
  • Ragi is also rich in calcium and iron. Thus, a very useful millet to strengthen bones and overcome anaemia.
  • Ragi is also a non-acid forming food and it easily digests.
  • Ragi is richer than rice in protein, fat and minerals especially calcium and iron.

Ragi may not look good or taste good like rice but everything tasty need not be always healthy.

Ragi is surely a great and complete food, that can be part of regular diet, especially for diabetics.
