Polycystic ovary syndrome or PCOS is often recognized by irregular periods or no menstruation at all. The ovaries of woman with PCOS have multiple cysts due to overproduction of hormones called androgens. Common symptoms of PCOS are acne, excessive hairiness, and male pattern baldness.

PCOS is also a lifestyle related disorder; thus, lifestyle changes help in PCOS> Women with PCOS have high levels of insulin. Too high levels of insulin can make your ovaries produce more androgens such as, testosterone. Higher body mass index also increases the risk of insulin resistance which makes it harder to lose weight. Hence, 50% of women with PCOS are obese or overweight.

Women with PCOS should avoid foods high in refined carbohydrates, sugary drinks and red meat. They should consume high-fibre vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, green and red peppers, almonds, berries, sweet potatoes, lean protein like fish, tomatoes, spinach etc.

Apart from diet, women with PCOS should contribute a significant portion of their day to physical activity. Experts agree that at least 150 minutes per week of exercise is recommended. The bottom line is that women with PCOS can live a fulfilling and productive life if they stick to their low sugar intake and low inflammation diet coupled with daily exercise regimen.
