In dementia, there is a reduction in memory, thinking, behaviour and the ability to perform day-to-day activities. Dementia is more common with aging. It affects about 50 million people worldwide, and 20 million new cases are added every year. Alzheimer's disease is the major contributor, accounting for 60–70% of dementia cases.

The forgetfulness in dementia initially is mild like forgetting, losing track in familiar places etc. but may progress to becoming unaware of the time and place, inability to recognize friends and family, inability to take care of self, and behavioural changes.

Dementia is treatable. Earlier, the diagnosis better the outcomes. However, it has a considerable negative impact on economic and social life. It can put families under physical, emotional and financial pressures as well. More than all, it has a significant impact on those who have dementia. Thus, society has to be kind to them.

Creating a dementia-friendly society

The society that empowers, supports, understands the rights and inclines towards people who have dementia can be considered a dementia-friendly society. The following steps are useful to create a dementia-free society:

  • Reducing the stigma of people who have dementia and their families.
  • The physical environment should be made to support the needs of those who have dementia; it should be accessible and easy to navigate.
  • The society and organizations should demonstrate awareness, respect and responsiveness towards people who have dementia.
  • Dementia-friendly care should be established so that dementia can be diagnosed early. The unique needs of care for dementia patients can be met.
  • There should be appropriate healthcare set up for dementia care.
  • The society has to make itself conscious about dementia and make people aware.
  • It is essential to understand and respect people with dementia. For example, one should give them sufficient time to express while talking as they may find recall difficult.
  • It is essential to understand the needs of care providers and help them.
  • The government should also consider dementia while framing policies to protect and take care of the people suffering.

Dementia, unfortunately, is common with aging. Society must be caring and friendly towards people who have dementia. Thus, creating a dementia-friendly society is very important.
