In anaemia, body does not have enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to the body’s tissue. If it is not treated the symptoms like weakness, fatigue, heart palpitations, shortness of breath will become worse over time.
Untreated anaemia may cause serious health problems. Mainly heart must pump more blood to fulfil the lack of haemoglobin. This extra work can damage the heart. Following are some of the complications that occurs, if anaemia is not treated:
- Tiredness: People with iron deficiency anaemia may feel more tiredness and lack of energy. They may be less active at work and their ability to stay awake and focus may be decreased.
- Weak immune system: People with anaemia can be easily affected by infections from bacteria and virus due to weak immune system. So it is difficult to fight against infections.
- Complications of heart and lungs: People with severe anaemia can easily develop complications like tachycardia (heart beating too fast) and heart failure.
- Pregnancy: Pregnant women with severe anaemia may be at risk of developing more complications, particularly during and after birth. This may also lead to depression following delivery. Babies born to mothers who are suffering from anaemia are at increased risk of:
- Premature birth
- Low birth weight
- Stroke: If haemoglobin is defective, it may lead to narrowing or blockage in the blood vessels of the brain, which results in serious life threatening strokes.
