Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs due to improper pressure applied to the median nerve in the wrist. The symptoms are numbness, weakness, tingling in hand. It is most commonly seen in people with improper positioning of wrist while using keyboard and mouse, exposure to prolonged vibrations from power tools and hand tools and some repeated movements which creates strains on wrist, such as typing, playing piano. Following are some measures to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome.

  • Try softer touch: You should not use more force than actually required. Hold the tools gently rather than holding it tightly. If you are using keyboard press the keys softly.
  • Take frequent breaks: If you are frequently using hand tools that vibrate or equipments that make you apply more force, then take a break from your work to stretch and bend your hands.
  • Stretch often: when you take breaks try often simple stretches like make a fist, release your fingers and stretch them straight, repeat it for 5 to 10 times.
  • Stay neutral: Avoid bending wrist up and down and keep wrist straight and in neutral position to avoid pressure on median nerve. Wear wrist brace when sleeping and at work when symptoms trigger.
  • Change your computer mouse: If your computer mouse is straining your wrist then change it.
  • Maintain proper posture: Due to improper posture shoulders roll forward and shoulder muscles put pressure on nerves in the neck. This can affect wrist.
