How to avoid pollen allergies?

Pollen is most common causes of allergies. These are very fine powders produced by flowers, trees, grass and weeds. In people with pollen allergies, immune system mistakes harmless pollen as dangerous and produces chemicals to fight against pollen. This is called as allergic reaction to the specific type of pollen which acts as allergen. This reaction leads to some symptoms such as:

  • Nasal congestion or running nose
  • Itchy and watery eyes.
  • Sinus pressure which leads to facial pain.
  • Cough and scratchy throat.
  • Asthmatic reaction may increase
  • Bluish coloured and swollen skin under the eyes.

Types

Birch pollen allergy- these are the most common airborne allergens and occur during spring season. When the trees bloom they release small pollen grains which are scattered by the wind.

Oak pollen allergy- Oak trees pollen is slightly less allergen compared to pollen of other trees. This occurs during spring season.

Grass pollen allergy- These are primary trigger of pollen allergies. This occurs during summer season. This pollen causes severe and difficult to treat symptoms.

Ragweed pollen allergy- Among weed pollen, ragweed plant is the main culprits of allergies.

Prevention

  • Avoid flowers, trees, grasses and weeds which trigger the allergies.
  • Stay indoor mostly on windy and dry days.
  • Avoid gardening and yard work in peak seasons.
  • Take food containing natural histamine properties like onions, garlic, citrus and apple.
  • When pollen is high in weather wear pollen dust mask.
