Food items to avoid in monsoon season

Monsoon is here! Our craving for some mouth-watering delicacies has begun. However, bad eating habits can cause infections and conditions like diarrhea in this season. It is very important that we prevent ourselves from the bad effects of monsoon on our health. One of the major ways to do so is to avoid certain foods in this season.

  • Fried food: Fried food is everyone’s tempting delight during the rainy season. First of all, fried food on roadside stalls is prepared in open and unhygienic environment. Eating food from such places causes infections. Moreover, the humid climate in monsoon makes our digestion slower. Eating fried food in this weather can cause stomach upset and bloating.
  • Roadside foods: Fresh food items that have been long exposed to monsoon, like fresh juices and chaat from street stalls can be bad for us. The air contaminates them and makes them infectious. It is better to prepare such items at home and consume them instantly.
  • Meat: Red meat should be avoided as it is difficult for digestive system to digest and absorb. You can choose to eat cold chicken salad as it is rich in fiber content and keeps the digestive system healthy.
  • Sea food: Monsoon is the breeding season for fish and prawns. It is better to eat chicken or mutton during this season. In case it is compulsory to eat sea food, be sure to choose the fresh variety and cook it well.
  • White rice: Consumption of white rice can lead to water retention and swelling, in the body, which can further weaken the immune system and digestion. It is best to eat brown or unpolished rice.
  • Sour food: Foods such as pickles, chutneys are made from contaminated water during monsoons. Consumption of these can lead to problems like diarrhea and major gastrointestinal issues.
  • Ensure clean water: Ensure that the water you use for drinking and cooking is clean. Water is the major source of infections in rainy season.
