Everything you should know about Fungal Infection

Fungal infections are contagious and can easily spread to several parts of the body. They spread from one person to another or from animals/soil to humans.

Common fungal infections:

  • Athlete’s foot - Athlete's foot, also called tinea pedis. This fungal infection affects the skin of feet, hands and nails. It causes peeling, burning, itching, and blisters on skin. This infection can easily spread from one person to another.
  • Ringworm – Ringworm affects skin and scalp. Ringworm grows particularly on humid parts of body. Its symptoms start as itchy, reddish, scaly rash. After some time, patches of ringworm can spread and form red rings.
  • Toenail fungus – Toenail fungus can affect fingernails, toenail and nail beds. This infection starts as a small light-coloured spot on the nail. Over a time, it changes the colour and shape of the nails. It also causes the nail to become thicker and brittle.

Prevention

  • Wash hands before and after touching pets and infected people.
  • Always keep skin clean and tidy, especially the folds of your skin.
  • Avoid sharing the bath towels and personal care products.
  • Socks should be change daily and avoid synthetic fibres.
  • Wear shoes in community showers and locker rooms.
  • Wear shoes that allow air to circulate freely.
  • Avoid sharing sporting equipment’s like helmets.
