Colds are more common during cold season due to following reasons:
- Viruses multiply and spread more when temperature and humidity are low
- Cold air reduces the mucus secretion in nose which is the first line of defense for common cold
- Nasal passages are dried during cold season and its easy for viruses to accumulate in dry nose
- Cold air is also known to decrease the phagocyte immune mechanism which engulf and digest common cold viruses
- People spend more time indoors due to cold environment and are closer to each other during cold season
- Children exposed to germs share common cold in school with others
Prevention of common cold During Cold Season:
- Maintain good health with exercise, sunlight, good nutritious food and sleep which help us to fight against common cold
- Maintain hygiene: Wash your hands before and after eating food
- Cover your hands when you have to cough and sneeze. It will reduce the spreading of germs
- Have good amount of vitamin C rich food like – oranges, avla, etc.
