Everyone experiences overeating on occasions such as at parties or on a relaxing vacation! But for some, eating that feels out of control becomes a regular occurrence leading to binge eating.

Emotional symptoms of this disorder include:

  • Eating unusually large portions of food
  • Eating when not hungry or even when uncomfortably full
  • Eating alone or in secret
  • Feeling depressed or upset about the over-eating

Risk factors and associated problems:

Binge eating is more common in women than in men. It more often begins in the late teens or early 20s. Family history, unplanned dieting, and depression could predispose one to this disorder. Binge eating poses complications. They lead to poor quality of life, social isolation, problems at the workplace, or medical conditions related to obesity such as joint problems, heart disease, or type 2 diabetes. If there have been more episodes of bingeing, it is advisable to seek medical help. A discussion of eating habits,  physical exam, or blood tests could help diagnose this condition.

The treatment plan to achieve healthy eating habits include:

  • Talk therapy in individual or group sessions
  • Medications such as antidepressants
  • Behavioral weight-loss programs

Some self-care steps help reinforce treatment plan:

  • Do not skip therapy sessions
  • Avoid dieting unless recommended and include foods that provide essential vitamins and minerals
  • Do not skip breakfast as doing so may make one more prone to eating higher calorie meals later in the day
  • Stay connected with caring family members and friends
  • Get physically active

Reinforcing a healthy and positive body image is what fosters well-being.
