Achieving a healthy work-life balance has become very challenging especially for people working in corporate sector. According to a Corporate Executive Board (CEB), about 53% of employees had a good work-life balance in 2006. However, this percentage decreased to 30% in 2009. Today, people have become so busy in making a living; they have forgotten how to live. However, work-life balance symmetry has started gaining importance and the companies are realizing that a healthy work-life balance of their employees is important for the company’s success. A healthy work-life balance means giving equal attention to all the things that are important in our life like work-career, health-fitness, family-relationships, spirituality-service, hobbies-desires, relaxation-leisure. Below we mention 10 steps to achieve a healthy work-life balance.
- Time-realization: The most important thing is to analyze your time and present situation. Keep a record of your daily activities (personal or work-related). This record will help you realize whether you are spending your time or losing it.
- Prioritizing: Realize what your priorities are and then spend your time accordingly. Make a list of all the important things to be done and analyze continuously when they need to be stopped, or continued or decreased.
- Setting goals: After prioritization, turn your priorities into real and achievable goals. Take out time for these goals just like you would if paying a visit to a doctor.
- Day planning: Every day when you wake up take 15-20 minutes to make a list of to do things. Plan out the tasks and activities for the whole day.
- Margining: Separate your office and personal work. Restrict yourself on what is to be done and not done at office or home. Tell about these restrictions to your co-workers, supervisors, and partner and family members.
- Healthy living: Keep your health at the top of your priority list. If your health is not good, you won’t be able to cope up with work also. Eat healthy, don’t skip meals, exercise daily, meditate and relax. Keep yourself unstressed always.
- Family nurturing: Nurture your relationships with your partner, family members and friends. Keep these relations on priority as they provide inner peace and satisfaction which automatically increases work productivity.
- Taking time for yourself: Take out time for your own, at least half an hour daily. Do what you like. Evolve yourself spiritually. These 30 minutes will work wonders in your daily and professional life.
- Telecommuting: It is a good option which can save your precious hours. It will increase your productivity as well as focus at work besides allowing you to take care of personal matters.
- Stop feeling guilt: And if while juggling between work and life, you make a mistake, then don’t guilt yourself with it. It is okay to make a mistake. Realize that nobody is 100% perfect.
